Day spa breaks at Nirvana Spa - The UK's largest, purest luxury health spa

Welcome to the unique world of Floatation…

Float your troubles away by experiencing the ultimate in pure relaxation at Nirvana Spas floatation therapy pools – the perfect remedy for today’s busy lifestyle.

At Nirvana Spa we have two purpose built floatation pools so more people can experience the relaxing and therapeutic benefits of water therapy.

The two pools bring the benefits of the Dead Sea to all guests and are the first large scale, Dead Sea pools of their kind in the country.  In fact, salt for the pools has been imported straight from the Dead Sea, where people have been experiencing the health benefits of water for centuries.  The water in the floatation pools is from Nirvana’s own pure water source.

Dr Rodney O’Donnell, Nirvana Spa medical adviser, said “the courage and imagination of Nirvana Spa to introduce Dead Sea floatation is a very exciting and innovative venture.  I have visited the Dead Sea twice and I believe the pleasurable and therapeutic effects that are recreated at the Nirvana Spa are second to none”.

The two pools are set in different surroundings and are designed to appeal to people seeking particular therapeutic benefits (the Celestial Room) or for those wanting a more social environment (the Ocean Room).

What is floatation?

Floatation started in 1954 when Dr John Lilly, an American medical practitioner and neuro-psychiatrist working for the National Institute of Mental Health, started experimenting with floatation tanks.  He wanted to create a device that would deprive or restrict the number of external stimuli so that he could test people’s mental reactions in an isolated atmosphere.  Today this is known as Restricted Environment Stimulation Therapy (REST).

Why try floatation?

Floatation offers four key benefits

One: Stress Relief

Floatation is incredibly relaxing.  When you’re participating in floatation, the normal external stimuli are removed, allowing the activity levels in your brain to drop.  This helps you get into progressively deeper states of relaxation, eventually reaching the “Theta” state.  It also stimulates the release of endorphins – chemicals in the brain that, according to their levels, can make you sad or happy.  Floating regularly is even said to increase your brains capacity for learning.

Two: Pain Relief

Many medical benefits of floatation have been reported, including lowering blood pressure, pain reduction and improvement of stress-related conditions, including digestive problems.  Independent research has also shown that floatation can alleviate: asthma, arthritis, rheumatism, sports injuries, multiple sclerosis, gastro-intestinal disorders, migraine and insomnia.

Three: Healthier Skin

Dead Sea Salts have been used for centuries to promote healthy skin.  In fact, Queen Cleopatra had her army invade the area to ensure that she had sole rights over this magical commodity for her own skin treatment.

The Dead Sea Salt itself contains a number of different minerals, such as bromide, calcium, magnesium and sulphur, all of which have an excellent effect on the skin.

Four: It’s Fun!

As well as all the health benefits if offers you, floating is fun.  If you’ve ever wanted to know how an astronaut feels in space, here’s your chance to find out.  In the Ocean Pool you can propel yourself through the water using just your hands or lie back and read a book while you remain buoyant – it’s all possible while you’re floating at Nirvana Spa
